Independent Locksmiths & Security are contracted at The University of Sydney.

A case study into a trusted partnership with The University of Sydney

Independent Locksmiths & Security commenced work as a contractor with The University of Sydney in June 2019, providing all types of mechanical security (locksmithing) services.

The University of Sydney is one of the top-rated universities in Australia and a Sydney landmark. Locksmithing here is a demanding and challenging task, with a massive need to service the main campus as well as several remote sites. The task consists of over 35,000 locks in these areas with hundreds of active master key systems.

Our services include two full-time locksmiths who are engaged on-site 80 hours per week to perform:

  • A comprehensive preventative maintenance plan
  • Ad-hoc service requests
  • Minor projects
  • Transformational projects
  • Key cutting that involves over 4,000 keys per year

Examples of some past and current locksmithing projects include:

  • Merewether building refurbishment
  • SCA Relocation (Rozelle campus to Old Teachers College building)
  • Chau Chak Wing Museum transformational build
  • Susan Wakil Health Building transformational build
  • ICT Audio Visual joinery locking solutions
  • Pearl Beach locking system upgrade
  • Engineering precinct – installation of locking systems throughout the new building
  • Camden Campus master key system upgrade
  • Narrabri Campus master key system upgrade

The University’s Protective Services team reviewed our successful partnership a year into the contract. They recognised us for successfully managing to provide the University with robust and professional locksmithing service, locking in their Campus Operations Services priority of valued point of contact for client operational needs.

Andrew Russell, the Master Locksmith at The University, commented:

Protective Services is pleased with ILS’ overall performance, which includes innovations e.g. improvement of the existing key manufacturing process and development of a lock hardware standard for the University.  As we lock in a second year with ILS, Protective Services continues with this partnership to deliver consistent and transparent delivery of trusted services for our clients, with a zealous focus on safety, compliance, and productivity.”

In addition to providing labor for the University, we have a team at head office managing the contract. This involves monthly reporting, innovation and improvement proposals, regular audits and monthly KPI reviews with the University. There are high standards for all reporting requirements and the monitoring and driving of performance. We are proud to consistently meet the University’s expectations and appreciate the successful partnership we have built.
