MLAK – 24/7 Access to Public Facilities for People with a Disability
The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) system is an initiative developed by the Master Locksmiths Association (MLAA). The master key allows access to a wide range of dedicated public facilities for people with disabilities. It allows users to unlock a wide range of secure amenities across Australia – at any time of day. The MLAK is a master key that grants access to:
- Disabled toilets fitted with MLAK locks
- Elevators at railway stations
- Changing Places (larger than standard accessible toilets to meet the needs of people with complex disabilities and their carer’s).
- Accessible toilets in National Parks
- Adaptive playground equipment such as the Liberty Swing
The system ensures that vital public amenities remain accessible to those who need them while protecting facilities from misuse or vandalism.
Who’s Eligible? The MLAK is available to purchase by people with a disability who have written authority from a doctor, a disability organisation, a community health centre, or an owner / management of a building with an MLAK fitted accessible toilet.
The National Public Toilet Map shows the location of more than 19,000 public and private public toilet facilities across Australia. Useful information is provided about each toilet such as location, opening hours, availability of baby change rooms, accessibility for people with disabilities and the details of other nearby toilets. Download free the National Public Toilet Map App.
Liberty Swings – is a world-first Australian innovation – a specially designed swing that allows children in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the joy of having a swing in the park. These swings are located in accessible parks and require an MLAK Key to access. Click to visit the Liberty Swing Website.
