The Prize Winning European Tour of Silca & Abus Factories

Our 2017 Apprentice of the Year winner, Zach Winslade and his Mentor, Keiran Mcgovern, made the 23 hour journey from Sydney via Dubai to arrive in Europe where they were greeted by Tom Stokes from LSC, who picked the boys up in a zippy Ford Fiesta.

The first visit was to the Silca factory in the beautiful region of Treviso, northeastern Italy at the base of the Austrian Alps.

The Silca Group is flagship company for the key business within dormakaba Group.  Silca S.p.A. is a leading European company manufacturing key blanks, key-cutting machines and equipment dedicated to the production and key blanks processing.  Silca product range is made of: keys, key-cutting machines, integrated key-cutting systems, industrial machineries dedicated to key manufacturing and duplication  and security products.  Silca’s key blanks product range is one of the wider and more complete and updated world wide, with over 60.000 different key blank articles dedicated to any kind of use: from airplanes to mail-boxes keys. Every day two new keys are added to there key blanks catalogues.

Zach and Keiran learnt a lot at the Silca factory and enjoyed getting a great insight into how each key blank makes its way from production in Italy, across the world to being cut in our workshop in Parramatta.  The boys were shown around the Silca Factory over two days and also had time to be spoilt with classic Italian cuisine and Prosecco, famous in this region.

Abus Factory tour in Germany

The second leg of their journey took them to the middle of Germany near the border to Holland where they were greeted at the airport by Andre, an Abus Representative. It was straight on the autobarn to the area of Dortmund where they met more of the Abus team and were shown around the original factory where Abus first began production in 1924.
ABUS is a German quality manufacturer and they ensure that their products are highly reliable and offer a long service life while being easy to operate. ABUS  provides a large product range of innovative security solutions in the areas of security at home, mobile security and commercial security. The ABUS group comprises the companies ABUS August Bremicker Söhne KG, ABUS Security-Center GmbH & Co. KG and ABUS Pfaffenhain GmbH with around 3,500 employees worldwide.
Keiran and Zach took a lot from learning about the many products that are commonly used in our workshop and also got an insight into how the locksmith industry changes from country to country. They were also very pleased with learning about the rich history and the modern culture instilled in Abus.
